Clarify
Goals
Clarifying your goals is the most important step
in any development projects. In this initial stage we are
forced to answer the question "what are we trying to
accomplish in the development of a website?" Are we trying
to sell a product or are we more of an online brochure? As
we clarify our goals we begin to determine our target audience,
our development policies, and the specific objective and scope
of the site's existence.
Planning
and Design
Next we think about how our target audience will
interact with our website. How can we present information
in the most coherent and accessible format? What online
tools will best suit our users? During the planning stage
we outline the content's site by determining our primary
links (as in a website navigation system) and arranging
our content within these links. We also determine the website's
style in the form of graphics and text.
Implementation
Here we begin the development of a prototype which
will be viewed only by the client and the designer. We begin
working on directory structure, HTML/Javascript, scripting,
and database development. We verify the code behind the
site is optimized and functioning properly.
Testing
In the testing phase we approach the website from
the perspective of a user to determine any changes that
need to be made. We test the website for browser compatibility,
easy-of-navigability and consistency in style and use. We
fine tune until we're positive our prototype is prepared
for release.
Release and
Promotion
At this point it is time to release your website
to the public. You should be prepared to handle the traffic
your website could potentially generate and the attention
you may need to give to your visitors. This is also the
time for promotion, through emails or posting on the internet,
exchanging links with relevant businesses, purchasing advertising
space on other website's and submitting your site to the
many search engines online.
Updates and
Innovation
Change is good. As your website continues to generate
interest, the needs of your target audience will become
clearer. Often what you thought was a good idea will generate
little interest while other aspects of your website will
have visitors pounding on your virtual door. This is the
time to recognize the needs of your audience and to make
modifications to your site. Fortunately, everyone on the
web wants their voice heard and there is little doubt that
as a website owner you will have any trouble getting an
opinion as to how you can improve your site.
